We are mountain bikers. We do it all. If it involves two wheels, pedals and dirt, we do it. The type of riding that we
really enjoy is any riding that involves going down hill fast: downhill (riding and racing), enduro races, adventure rides
with a lot of descents, etc.
To train for this type of riding we do trail laps, picking lines and learning each section of the trail. This gives us a sense of mastery and we just love improving and going faster on our bikes. To know how much faster we go we train with a stopwatch.
In April 2016, one of our founders, Christian, did laps on a local trail, Lower Predator on Tiger Mountain in Washington State. He used Strava and Freelap to time his laps. If you are not familiar with Freelap, it is a timing system that consists of two antennas, one for the beginning of the trail and one for the end, and a stopwatch. The stopwatch automatically starts and stops when you ride by the antennas and it's precise to a 100th of a second. It's great for precision but it's about $400 and inconvenient to set up and take down the antennas. His times from Freelap were around 1 minute and 42 seconds: 1:42:21 - 1:43:76 to be precise. He also got Strava PRs that day: 3:37 (3 minutes and 37 seconds) and 9:25 (9 minutes and 25 seconds). Yup, you read that right, his second best time according to Strava was 9 minutes and 25 seconds with a moving time of 1:50. Really!!! Here is his ride from that day: https://www.strava.com/activities/533830861
He was stuck between the inconvenience of the antennas setup and complete lack of precision. That's how 321 Sports Lab was born. A convenient and precise stopwatch.
